Susan Aglukark to Speak & Perform at RDC
Join Perspectives: Canada in the World, hosted by RDC’s Department of Humanities & Social Sciences, as they welcome Susan Aglukark.
Wednesday, February 29 RDC Arts Centre, Main Stage 7:30 p.m.
Aglukark will speak and perform from her award-winning repertoire of music. Her dynamic presentation will touch on themes of empowerment and how respecting others leads to a healthier and happier life. She will use both spoken word and song to share her cultural experiences and address current social issues such as rapid change, health care, and the effects of colonization on Aboriginal communities.
A three-time Juno Award winning artist, Aglukark is an Officer of the Order of Canada. One of Canada’s most unique artists, she blends the Inuktitut and English languages with contemporary pop music arrangements to tell the stories of her people, the Inuit of Arctic Canada. Known for her clear voice and striking lyrical combinations of English and Inuktitut, she weaves words and music into hope as she helps to build a better future for the Inuit of Arctic Canada.
Her pure, clear voice and her themes of hope, spirit and encouragement have captivated and inspired listeners around the world, including world leaders. Aglukark has performed for Queen Elizabeth II, Nelson Mandela, Canadian Prime Ministers Chrétien and Mulroney and French President Jacques Chirac. Equally important to her are the many, many people she has performed for and spoken to on reserves, in small towns and in villages across Canada and the Arctic. Perspectives: Canada in the World is a public lecture series presented by RDC’s Humanities & Social Sciences Department. This Series features internationally recognized speakers on topics important to our community, our country and the world. Proceeds from this lecture series support scholarships for Humanities and Social Sciences students at the College.
